I think we fully deserved to beat Spurs on Saturday, but there was a lot of tension near the end. I couldn't believe their penalty decision at first, it was a confusing moment and nobody really knew what was going on. At first I thought the referee was going to book a Tottenham player, and give us a goal kick. Then suddenly it was a penalty, so I went through all the different emotions you can imagine.
But after that, the most important thing for me was to see how we would react and I was confident we would react well. We were very strong and finally we got the penalty and scored that crucial second goal. I think we found our mental resources and strength to bounce back and win the game.
In the second half it became nervy and we looked like we just wanted to hold on to the 1-0 victory. That was a little bit dangerous and we needed a final push to score another goal once they came back to 1-1. Edu gave another great performance for us on Saturday. I think he has convinced many people from game to game that he is a good football player. He is only 23 years old and he had a great first half especially.
Lauren held his nerve well for the spot-kick. I designated Thierry Henry as the number one taker and Edu as number two. But neither of those players were on the field so Lauren wanted to take it.
I have seen so many penalties not going in recently that I was a bit nervy, especially when I saw the player taking the penalty was not the number one taker. But what gave me confidence was that he had scored some important penalties for Cameroon. And also he is a strong, strong, boy in his head. When Thierry was down Lauren took the ball. The players sort their problems out on the pitch and take responsibility individually.
Knowing that Manchester United had won earlier in the day put a little extra pressure on us and we lost some of the fluency in the second half. We became a little bit nervy and cautious and not so good going forward, but we kept our will to win and that is what saw us through.
It was an important victory, but there is still all to play for. What is very important is that it is in our hands and we know that if we are strong at home it will stay in our hands. We know that both Liverpool and Manchester United are a very big threat, but it is our performances that will decide it and we are very confident.
