Hill Wood to sell Dixon & Adams

Arsenal will be forced to sell six players this summer, according to their chairman Peter Hill-Wood. Hill-Wood said that the effect of ITV Digital going into administration would spread to the Premiership and that clubs would have to tighten their belts.

He also warned Premiership players not to expect pay rises this summer in an interview with the Daily Telegraph newspaper. "There will be a knock-on effect on the Premier League," Hill-Wood said. "I think even in the Premier League there will be players and staff who will be cut. We might let half a dozen players go at the end of this season. One or two players, like Lee Dixon, who is 38, and Tony Adams, may not have much longer to go. I don't know what Adams wants to do. Some of the players released will still be on contract.

"This is a period of retrenchment for football. It has got to be. We've got to the limit of our spending. A lot of big clubs are struggling."

Adams, who has indicated that he will retire this summer, has yet to take a final decision on his future. Hill-Wood did not name other players who could leave, but there have been question-marks over the futures of Sylvain Wiltord and Kanu.

The club are determined to hang on to Patrick Vieira, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid. Hill-Wood said that Premiership wages would not be going up this summer, despite David Beckham reportedly being set to agree a £90,000-a-week contract with Manchester United.

"The top dozen players are going to get more," he said. "But the rest of them, even in the Premiership, will not. I don't know how the clubs can go on paying what they are paying. Arsenal are spending more on wages than ever before but we're not bust. We pay our players far too much and that has got to end. This season, there are going to be no pay rises. Clubs have been over-extending themselves, every club is facing serious financial pressure."
