Panathinaikos

This game took place at Kapfenberg, Austria, on Thursday 1st August at 7pm as part of the club's pre-season friendly fixtures.

Final result was 1-0 (the game lasted 45 minutes and was part of a three team tournament). Arsenal's goalscorer was Sylvain Wiltord.

The offical report from Arsenal.com: "Gilberto Silva made his first appearance in an Arsenal shirt as we kicked off the mini-tournament in Kapfenberg with a win. The Brazilian played for the full 45 minutes and looked in excellent shape following his move from Atletico Mineiro. The World Cup winner sat deep in the centre of midfield and protected the back four as we enjoyed the best of the action against the Greek champions. Silva wore the number 19 shirt, although his arrival on the Austrian tour was so recent that there was not time to put his name on the back. But on this performance he will not be easily forgotten as he broke up the Panathinaikos attacks and put us on the offensive as quickly as possible with short, sharp passing. Jeremie Aliadiere also caught the eye as he continued to shine in Austria. The young Frenchman scored two and created three more against Neuberg last week, and was equally as impressive in the opening match of a tournament also involving Italian giants AS Roma. Aliadiere almost scored with a spectacular overhead bicycle kick and was only denied by a superb save from goalkeeper Antonis Nikopolidis. The striker also hit the post after great work from midfielder Kolo Toure and saw a glancing header flash just wide of the upright. At the other end, Stuart Taylor was in great form as he produced two smart saves to deny Joonas Koolka and Michaelsen. However, we dominated possession and deserved the victory which was earned thanks to Sylvain Wiltord's towering header in the 28th minute. The French international rose majestically to power home Graham Barrett's left wing cross into the top corner from ten yards. Wiltord nearly added a second, but his strong shot was well blocked by Nikopolidis. And the keeper produced another smart save from Aliadiere to ensure the Greeks did not suffer a heavier defeat."
