Bolton Wanderers

This game took place at Highbury, on Saturday 21st September at 3pm. Attendance was 37,974.

Final result was 2-1. Arsenal's goalscorers were Henry (26') & Kanu (90').

Here's the Arsenal.com report: "An injury-time winner from Kanu kept Arsenal flying high at the top of the Premiership on Saturday. Ten-man Bolton seemed to have come from behind to take point - exactly as they had on September 22, 2001. But 364 days later it was our Nigerian striker, starting up front instead of Dennis Bergkamp, who poked home the winner two minutes into added time. Earlier, Thierry Henry shrugged off a 13th-minute penalty miss to fire Arsenal into a 1-0 lead just before the half-hour from Freddie Ljungberg's clever through ball. The record-equalling strike gave us an injection of confidence before the break but Gareth Farrelly levelled seconds after the interval. Despite a frantic pursuit, the winner seemed elusive. Then came that man Kanu. Before kick-off, Lauren replaced Oleg Luzhny at right back and Ray Parlour took over in central midfield from the suspended Patrick Vieira. With their tally of injuries, it was no surprise that Bolton came with defence in mind. Dean Holdsworth was their lone striker but Youri Djorkeaff and Henrik Pedersen were always willing to break quickly to join him. Until we took the lead, the opening period at Highbury was much like the North London weather - grey with sporadic glimpses of sunshine. We had barely begun easing through the gears when we were presented with a penalty in the 13th minute. Sylvain Wiltord threaded a ball through to the scampering Ljungberg who was tugged back by Gudni Bergsson. Henry sent Jussi Jaaskelainen the wrong way but his shot hit the inside of the post and bounced across the face of goal to safety. Our French striker sought to atone for his error immediately. He poked the ball over the keeper after Bergsson had dallied but not convert, rolling the ball wide of the empty goal from an acute angle. Redemption arrived in the 26th minute when Ljungberg spotted our French striker racing into the area. Henry collected, skipped around the diving keeper and slotted home in familiar fashion. His fifth of the season. It seems that every Arsenal strike is historic at the moment. This one meant we equalled the all-time League record for scoring in consecutive games. We are now level with Chesterfield on 46 matches. Unsurprisingly, the goal gave us a lift. Parlour thumped narrowly wide soon afterwards and Wiltord also went close. But Bolton are a battling outfit. Holdsworth troubled our defence aerially and, in response to our goal, fired a couple of shots wide from long range. The crowd had barely settled back into their seats for the second half when the visitors equalised in unusual fashion. There seemed little danger when Farrelly had the ball on the left wing but the former Aston Villa midfielder's intended cross sailed over David Seaman and into the far corner of the net. Our response was swift. Kanu jinked past the keeper but his shot was cleared off the line, and Wiltord's follow-up hit one of the forest of bodies between him and the goal. Despite further pressure during which Henry had a goal ruled out for offside, the Bolton defence remained solid. Wenger brought on Francis Jeffers and Bergkamp with 23 minutes to go as went for the three points. But Bolton were causing problems of their own through the pace of substitute Michael Ricketts. Kanu's header was well-saved by Jaaskelainen but Frandsen sent a volley just wide of Seaman's goal. Bolton's cause was hampered when Ivan Campo was sent off with 10 minutes left for a second booking. Then substitute Kolo Toure nearly squeezed home a header but Jaaskelainen gratefully held on. The winner came when Kanu prodded into net from close range after Henry had nodded the ball down. Jeffers almost added a third in the dying seconds in a breathless finale."
